Virus Attack

We have had a group of year 6s in over the last term who have been shooting breaking news reports about devastating new epidemics.

First, they used Brushes Redux to design a magnified image of their virus. This is a great painting app which is really realistic and replays the painting process back to you once you have finished.

Next, the children used the I Can Animate app to create animations of their viruses growing in the petri dish. They added a few little bits of plasticine in each frame to show the virus dividing and multiplying. We decided not to use a tripod as we wanted a shaky quality as if the reporter was shaking with fear as he filmed the virus starting to spread!

The children also learnt how to use Photoshop to produce a ticker (the bit with writing at the bottom of the screen) and did some infectious disease mathematical modelling to find out how quickly their viruses were spread.

Finally, they wrote a script and filmed their news reports using the green screen before editing them in iMovie.
